How to verify a rishta profile: a Shia family's checklist

Every Shia family has a story about the rishta that looked perfect on paper and fell apart on the first phone call — the age that didn't match, the degree that didn't exist, the 'doctor' who was still a student. Verification isn't distrust; it's the Islamic principle of doing your due diligence before a decision this consequential.

Start with the profile itself

A genuine profile has texture: specific details about education, work, and family; a natural bio rather than generic adjectives; photos that look like the same person. Be cautious of profiles with no photo, stock-photo-like images, or bios that could describe anyone. On a well-run platform, look for verification badges — a photo-verified or ID-verified mark means someone actually checked.

The family channel

In our community, the strongest verification is still the family channel: who are their parents, which Imambargah do they attend, who in your extended network knows them? A genuine family welcomes these questions. Evasiveness about basic family details is the single biggest red flag.

Verify the checkable claims

Education and employment are checkable: university, employer, professional license. You don't need to run a background check on day one, but before things get serious, the key claims should be confirmable. Istikhara comes after due diligence, not instead of it.

Red flags that warrant pausing

Refusal to involve family early; pressure to move communication off-platform immediately; stories that shift between conversations; reluctance to video call; requests for money or financial help — any of these means slow down and reassess, no matter how good the match seems.

Build verification into your search

Choose platforms that verify: email-verified accounts, photo verification, ID checks. The few minutes a genuine person spends verifying saves both families months. And when you find a verified, genuine match — move with the purposeful speed our deen encourages.

May Allah protect every family from deception and guide them to truthful, blessed matches. Ameen.
